history

Already in the 12th century there was a small Jewish community and a synagogue in Neuss. The Jews lived on the “Judensteg” near the later Hessentor and later in the “Glockhammer”, where the synagogue was also located. The Jews were expelled from the city in 1463. Since the time of the occupation of Neuss by Napoleon and the associated freedom of religion , a Jewish community has formed again, which initially set up its prayer room in a private house on Neustraße.

The new synagogue building designed by building officer Friedrich Weise (1801–1874) was inaugurated on March 29, 1867. Structurally, the building was based on an oriental style with a light reddish stone facade, four twin towers and a gold star of David . In the interior there was no female gallery , in the seating arrangement men and women were separated by the aisle. In 1890 the Neuss Jewish community had reached its highest number of 300 members.

The synagogue was burned down during the November pogrom on the night of November 9-10, 1938. Many of the Neuss Jews came from Hülchrath at this time ; they had thought they were safer in Neuss. A memorial in the form of a 30-ton stone, edited by the sculptor Ulrich Rückriem , has been a reminder of the building since 1995.

In 2020 a new synagogue is to be opened in Neuss for around 570 Jews in the Neuss area, at the location where the Alexander Bederov Center was located.
