history

Historic tombstones lined up on the city wall

The cemetery was laid out in 1599 by order of Duke Johann Ernst outside the Eisenach city wall in front of the Predigertor, which is no longer preserved, and provided with a surrounding wall. In 1697, the Kreuzkirche was built on the site of the cemetery. Extensions in 1730, 1740 and 1834 gave the cemetery its current size of 0.75 hectares.

In 1829 the cemetery was given a mortuary, which was considered the most modern of its time and therefore received a lot of national attention. In 1867 the cemetery was closed with the opening of the new municipal main cemetery in the north of the city.

The site was hardly maintained and fell into disrepair, especially in the period after the Second World War, and numerous historical burial sites were removed over the years. The morgue from 1829 was demolished in 1978 because it was in disrepair.

Today the remains of the city wall, the stork tower and a few gravestones of famous Eisenach personalities are still preserved from the cemetery. The few remaining tombstones are mostly no longer in their original place.

Personalities

Numerous members of the Bach family of musicians , including the parents of Johann Sebastian Bach, were buried in the cemetery. Dorothea Grimm, the wife of the poet Wilhelm Grimm , was also buried here.
