The Kreuzkirche

The Kreuzkirche is a listed, secular church building in the city of Eisenach in Thuringia . The Kreuzkirche is located in the city center of Eisenach am Schlossberg on the edge of the old cemetery .

history

The cruciform church was built in 1697 based on a design by the architect Johann Mützel on the site of the Eisenach cemetery. Among other things, parts of the towers of the former Eisenach cathedral , which were demolished at the same time, were used. The Kreuzkirche was used as an Evangelical Lutheran church until the cemetery was closed in 1867 and then profaned.

The Kreuzkirche was damaged in the air raids on Eisenach in World War II and repaired after the war. Most recently, the building served as an archive for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Thuringia .
