Old real catalog Berlin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Old Real Catalog (ARK) of the Berlin State Library catalogs its holdings of printed matter from 1501 to the year of publication 1955 (approx. Three million titles) according to content-related criteria. Forerunners were the "inventories" by Friedrich Wilkens, begun in 1818/19. The "large real catalog" was developed between 1841 and 1881. Julius Schrader , trained in natural sciences and working at the library since 1835, began with the areas of zoology and botany, the last area was medicine.

The classification reflects in many ways the level of knowledge and the historical circumstances of the time it was created in the 19th century, while the more recent extensions reflect the time it was created (technology: mid-20th century). The sequence of the individual scientific disciplines corresponds to the sequence of the university faculties in the lesson catalog : Theology - Law - Medicine - Philosophy. A general department is prefixed. Subjects that were not yet taught at universities at the beginning of the 19th century are inserted in the appropriate place. Special catalogs created for special topics were assigned to related systematic parts (e.g. the war collections of history). The catalog was later expanded in some areas, e.g. B. in the field of technology.

The systematics of this subject catalog for the most extensive historical print inventory in a German library has been completely prepared, electronically recorded and made available online. From January 2017 the online system of the old real catalog with over 225,000 system points will be fully available.
