In the beginning they are still children is a novel by the German writer Petra Hammesfahr published by Wunderlich Verlag in March 2006 and her first book that is not a detective novel. It is set in a medium-sized city in Germany today.

The 43-year-old Kathi Lenzen has had to cope with several strokes of fate: her husband and son have been victims of car accidents. After the death of her husband, his small computer company almost went bankrupt. However, she did not let herself get down and the company was saved. Kathi herself helps out in the office by the hour out of fear of being alone. Even so, her emotional scars have not yet healed.

One day she sees a sixteen-year-old neglected boy shoplifting in a mall. She follows him and sees that he disappears into an empty house. The police shrug it off. The social worker Dr. Engelbrecht to take this Jörg Simeon in for a few weeks. The solitary stray should see what life can be like.

The boy ran away from the desperate circumstances at home when he was nine. The father is an alcoholic, everything grows over her head for the mother, the family lives on welfare. The boy has a younger brother and two older brothers, one of whom is currently in prison. Sister Anita has made the leap into a middle-class life, is married and is the only one in the family to work.
