from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The street Am Fischmarkt is located on the northeastern edge of the city center of Lüneburg . The square is shaped by the old crane .

location

The road is about 70 meters long and runs in a north-south direction. To the west of the street is the fish market with the old crane. In addition to two other architectural monuments, the Altes Kaufhaus building at Kaufhausstrasse 5 characterizes the street. The street ends in the north at Lünertorstraße , here it turns into Kaufhausstraße . In the south, the street ends at Bei der Lüner Mühle , no other streets cross the short street. The house numbering starts in the south on the east side of the street, there are no houses in the west of the street.

history

As early as 1410, the street was named “by deme vischmaecke”. Nearby there was the “Häringssteg”, a gangway with stalls selling fish. This gangway crossed the Ilmenau and ends on the south side of the road. Here was an open space as part of the Lüneburg harbor. The old crane and the old department store belonged to this port . Here goods were brought ashore by crane and stored in the department store. In 1622 a small department store was built here, which was replaced by a larger one in 1721. There is nothing left of these department stores today. The crane was shut down in 1860 and the transport of goods had been shifted to the railway.

Architectural monuments

There are three architectural monuments in the street.

crane A crane at this point is already occupied in 1330. In 1537 the crane was given a new mechanism. In 1795 the crane was badly damaged in a flood, so a new crane was built in 1797. The lifting capacity of this crane was around 1.6 tons . In the middle of the 19th century, the transport was moved to the railway, so the crane was shut down in 1860. From 1999 to 2004 the crane was extensively restored. Lüneburg-alterhafen05.jpgmore pictures
