America Alone

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

America Alone - The End of the World as We Know It is a book by the Canadian journalist Mark Steyn that was published in 2006. A German translation is not yet available, with the exception of a few excerpts that have appeared in various German-language newspapers.

In the book, Steyn deals with the future development of the western world and looks at it extremely pessimistically. Although the book deals with a serious subject, it is humorous, sometimes sarcastic.

In Steyn's view, most of what is commonly referred to as the Western world will not survive the 21st century. A considerable part of the western world will disappear in the near future ("in our lifetime"), including most of the European countries.

Steyn comes to this conclusion on the basis of three developments that he considers to be key factors:

  1. The demographic decline of the west
  2. The unsustainable western welfare states
  3. Civilizational fatigue
