The American Historical Review ( AHR ) is a historical journal . It is the official publication of the American Historical Association (AHA). Members of this organization include professors, historians, teachers and students. With a circulation of approximately 18,000 per issue, it is the largest and highest-circulation historical magazine in the United States.
Founded in 1884 and officially registered in 1889, the magazine is currently published five times a year in February, April, June, October and December. The approximately 400 pages of an issue contain academic treatises and critical reviews of current historical publications from the entire spectrum of historical studies. The editorial office is based at Indiana University , Bloomington. The journal's advisory board, which advises the editorial team, is made up of fourteen respected historians from all areas of historical studies. From 2007 to 2012 the magazine was published by the University of Chicago Press . It has been published by Oxford University Press since 2013 .
