American landrace

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The American Landrace ( English : American Landrace ) is a beef pig breed from the United States of America .

Breeding history

The American landrace is descended from pigs of the Danish landrace breed . In the early 1930s, the US Department of Agriculture reached an agreement with the Danish State Department to purchase 24 Danish Landrace pigs for research, on the condition that they could not be commercially marketed as pure-bred animals. The pigs were subsequently compared with the American breeds in many characteristics.

In 1949, Denmark issued the US breeding restrictions. The American Landrace Association was founded in 1950 after the animals were crossed with Norwegian Landrace and Swedish Landrace pigs.
