Lotus Ami Pro (also Samna Ami Professional ) was a word processing program originally developed for Microsoft Windows .

history

It was developed as a 16-bit Windows program by Samna, Corp. which was later acquired by Lotus . Therefore, the file extension .sam is explained for the Ami Pro text format. Lotus Ami Pro had set milestones under Windows by enabling the first real layout functions in DTP orientation in 1988 and relying on real WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) under Windows, while Microsoft Word for Windows only appeared a year later.

At CeBIT in March 1993, a 32-bit version for OS / 2 was also presented; this was ported with the Borland C ++ compiler. This version was also part of the Lotus SmartSuite for OS / 2.

In the early and mid-1990s, Ami Pro was one of the best known and best word processors. After the takeover of Lotus by IBM in 1995, the development in favor of the successor program Lotus Word Pro was stopped. Documents saved with Ami Pro could also be read in by this program.

Range of functions

In addition to the actual main program for word processing, Ami Pro includes context-sensitive help, simple image processing and a formula editor. In addition to the thesaurus and the spell checker, an English grammar checker is also included. Formats from other programs can be read using a variety of installable text filters. Drawings and image data from third-party programs can be integrated using the graphics import filter. Recurring tasks can be automated using a BASIC-like macro language; a dialog editor and a number of example macros can be installed for this purpose. The procedure language REXX can also be used here under OS / 2 .

The Adobe Type Manager was included for font display, as was the additional support for HP NewWave.
