Amir Hatami (born circa 1965/1966 in Zanjan ( Persian امیر حاتمی)) is a Brigadier General of the regular Iranian armed forces and Defense Minister of Iran .

After he was designated as defense minister by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on August 8, 2017, he was elected defense minister by parliament on August 20, 2017 (261 yes, 10 no, 13 abstentions and 4 invalid votes). He is the successor to Hossein Dehghan .

It is the first time since 1989 that a member of the regular Iranian armed forces has been given this post, in most cases the position is given to an officer of the Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) .
