Amphora (heraldry)

Amphora in the coat of arms

The amphora , also the amphora , is a common figure in heraldry and its shape is based on the real old vessel for liquids, regardless of the special type.

The heraldic figure is depicted as a very slim tall vessel with two, but sometimes only one, handle in the upper area. The latter is often a jug if the description of the coat of arms does not make it clear. Small squat amphorae are not often used as a coat of arms figure, as this prevents confusion with the jug.

All heraldic tinctures are possible as the color , but gold and silver predominate alongside red. The coat of arms figure can be occupied with another figure or only decorated, which should be reported (mentioned) in the description. The small footprint of the vessel is characteristic.
