An Comunn Gàidhealach ( ACG ; [ əŋ ˈkʰomən̪ˠ ˈkɛː.əl̪ˠəx ] literally "The Gaelic Society"), commonly known as An Comunn , is a Scottish organization founded in Oban in 1891 to support and promote the Gaelic language , the Scottish Gaelic language , of culture and history at the local, national and international level. The company is closely associated with the Royal National Mòd . As a symbol, the society chose the Irish sun flag and other symbols of the Celtic heritage.
history
English was introduced as a school language in Scotland by law in 1872. This led to a decrease in the Gaelic-speaking population of Scotland. In 1891, An Comunn was founded in Oban to promote the learning and use of the Gaelic language. In 1892 a festival, Mòd in Gaelic, was introduced to celebrate the music and culture of the Highlands. This festival lives on to this day, now with a Royal Charter under royal patronage as the Royal National Mòd (Charity No. SCO01282).
