Royal National Mòd

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Royal National Mòd ( Gaelic Am Mòd Nàiseanta Rìoghail ) is a festival organized and hosted by An Comunn Gàidhealach to promote the Gaelic language, music and culture. The Mòd, Gaelic for “annual meeting”, has been held annually in various parts of Scotland since 1892, with the exception of the years of the First and Second World Wars . In 2019 the event took place in Glasgow from October 11th to 19th.

The Mòd is a competition in various disciplines, including Gaelic music and songs, Highland dance, instrumental music, drama, sports and literature. In addition to the National Mòd, various local Mòds are held, but they do not achieve the importance of the Royal National Mòd.

In 1992 the Mòd was confirmed by a Royal Charter . The patroness of the festival is Queen Elisabeth II.
