Career

On December 27, 2011, the trained lawyer was elected mayor of Madrid with a majority of the votes of the PP parliamentary group in the city council as the first woman. She thus succeeded Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón , who moved to the Rajoy I cabinet as Spanish Minister of Justice . Before that, she had been a member of the city council since 2007, responsible for environmental and transport policy.

In September 2014, Botella declared that she would not be available for a second term as Mayor of Madrid.

Others

Ana Botella, who grew up as the eldest of thirteen siblings, has been married to the former Spanish Prime Minister José María Aznar since 1977 . The couple has three children. Botella, like her husband, represents the conservative wing within her party. For example, she criticized the same-sex marriage introduced by the Spanish Socialists , which earned her the title “Queen of apples and pears” in the Spanish press because, in her opinion, “an apple and a pear cannot be the same as two apples”.
