The Anbo-Forest Railway ( Japanese :安房森林軌道), Awa-Forest Railway (安房森林鉄道) or Yakushima-Forest Railway (屋久島森林鉄道) is a 18.3 km long narrow gauge - forest railway with a track width of 2 feet 6 inches (762 mm ) on the Japanese island of Yakushima , of which an 11.2 km long section is still used as a works railway.

history

The main route from the port of Awa (安 房) to the Kosugi Valley was opened in 1923. It was operated by the Yaku Forestry Department, which was subordinate to the Kumamoto Forestry Department. The narrow-gauge railway has not been used to transport long timber since May 1969, but is still used as a works railway for a hydropower plant. Among other things, it is used to dispose of faeces from a toilet building. It is also used to transport yakusugi cedar tree stumps that are occasionally excavated, which are used in crafts, furniture production and as building material.

Since May 1969 there are only the main route, the Kosugi Valley route, the Ishizuka route and the Aobo 95 branch route. In August 1970 the office in the Kosugi Valley was closed. In 1971 the Aobo 95 branch line and in 1975 the section from Awa to the tree nursery were closed. Then the section from the tree nursery to the Arakawa Gleisdreieck was used. In 1994 the 3.5 km long section in the Kosugi Valley was dismantled. The Ishizuka Line was shut down due to damage to the track bed.

Sections of the railroad tracks are also used as hiking trails. However, one section of the route is not publicly accessible. Efforts have been made since around 2013 to use a section of the route as a tourist train.
