Bianco world map (1436)

Andrea Bianco was a Venetian navigator and cartographer. He is the author of both the Bianco world map (in the year 1436) and another two-part portolan card from the year 1448. The indication of a year was not the rule on cards at this time. However, the latter dating is considered certain, as he states on this card that he drew it in London that year.

The Bianco world map is part of an atlas, the ten sides of which are made of vellum with the dimensions 29 × 38 cm. It is considered to be the first surviving cartographic work to depict the Portuguese discovery of Cape Verde . On the ninth page is the world map, which is shown opposite.

Andrea Bianco is also considered an employee of Fra Mauro , who is considered to be an even more important cartographer of his time.
