The current building, built in 1903, is on the historic site of Angel, as well as the current pub of the same name to the right.

Angel is an urban area in what is now Islington in North London. Located directly on the inner “Ring Road”, the area is one of the city's 35 major local centers. It is an important economic and gastronomic location and classified as a Business Improvement District (BID). Angel goes beyond the former boundaries of the historic boroughs of Clerkenwell and Islington, later Finsbury and Islington. The area is named after an old inn, the Angel Inn, which was located on the corner of Islington High Street and Pentonville Road. The area has been part of the London Borough of Islington in Greater London since 1965 .

history

etymology

Angel was named after the Angel Inn , which was first mentioned by name in the early 17th century. This was named because of its affiliation to the Clerkenwell Priory and the figure on the inn sign, the Archangel Gabriel . The building has been used as an inn since the 16th century. "The Angel" primarily refers to the historic building itself, while the surrounding district and the associated underground station are only called "Angel".

administration

Since the medieval boundaries of Clerkenwell and Islington ran through Angel, the southern part of Liverpool Road and the western part of Islington High Street and the Angel Inn itself were part of Clerkenwell. Despite this administrative division, which is even reflected in local legends, both parts of Angel were considered part of the (sub) town of Islington. When the parishes, thanks to rapid population growth, finally turned more and more into suburbs of London, Clerkenwell was included in 1604 and Islington in 1636 in the weekly death register of London. However, the parishes were still part of the County of Middlesex for centuries . It was not until 1855 that they became part of the Metropolitan Board of Works in London and in 1889 part of the County of London. Clerkenwell eventually became part of the Metropolitan Borough of Finsbury , Islington became part of the Metropolitan Borough of Islington of the same name in 1900. In 1965 the area was officially reunited in the London Borough of Islington.

traffic

Angel is a major transport hub in North London. Not only does the A1 , the longest British trunk road (running from London to Edinburgh), run through the district, but also the inner London ring road runs directly through Angel. In addition to numerous bus lines, Angel also has a subway station of the same name, which is on the Northern Line .
