The Vordernberg detention center is an institution of the Austrian Ministry of the Interior in which persons obliged to leave the country whose asylum or alien law procedures make a freedom-restricting security appear necessary are accommodated. It was opened on January 15, 2014 in Vordernberg and is intended to relieve other police detention centers .

history

Due to the massive increase in refugee and migration movements towards Western Europe and thus also to Austria in the last few decades, there has been a sharp increase in official acts by the Aliens Police. It emerged from this that detention had to be carried out in the police detention centers, which were neither structurally nor infrastructurally nor in terms of personnel suitable for the long term. With a view to fulfilling international requirements, Austria was therefore prompted to set up a suitable facility that was designed for around 220 people.

From 2006, a corresponding location search was carried out, which finally determined the location in Vordernberg. A referendum in this regard in the municipality resulted in an approval of almost 70% for the planned project. A Europe-wide tender for the planning of the system followed, which was won by the Viennese architects SUE .

At the end of March 2012, the groundbreaking ceremony took place for the construction, which was built on an area of around 9,500 square meters. The facility was built by the Federal Real Estate Company , which was rented to the Ministry of the Interior after completion. The Vordernberg detention center is subordinate to the Styrian regional police department .
