Attachment number (administration)

Attachment numbers can be used if one or more attachments are to be added to a cover letter and there is a risk that the attachments will be lost or mixed up unnoticed . Attachment numbers are small numbered pieces of paper. They are perforated like postage stamps or prepared in some other way for easy separation. They are made self-adhesive or rubberized . Every two pieces of paper have an identical number and are otherwise consecutively numbered. System numbers are either rolled up as a small roll or supplied in a dispenser box.

The connection between a cover letter and an attachment is achieved by affixing the same attachment number to both. Another attachment is provided with the next attachment number and the cover letter is completed with the paired attachment number. An attachment number can replace a descriptive text that would otherwise have to be included in the cover letter to clearly identify the attachment. In the simplest case, a cover letter only has the text "Attachments:" at the end and one or more attachment numbers are stuck underneath.

Since the numbers have at least three digits, a mess of several letters with their attachments can be sorted again. The different numbering is also useful if the attachments of a letter can be confused with one another and have to be individually identified anyway.
