Antepagment

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An antepagment is a plate, usually made of terracotta , which could also be in relief or painted, which was attached in front of the beam heads of a temple, which protruded from the fronts. They served on the one hand to protect the wood from the weather and on the other hand as a decorative element. They are considered a pre-form of the closed roof structures with Tympana . The Antepagments from Pyrgi are mentioned here as an example .
