history

The company was founded on September 6, 1917. The owner of the company, the forest company Southwest Lumber Mills, opened up the forests in the area of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest with the construction of the 116 km long railway line from Holbrook to Snowflake and McNary .

Construction work began on October 1, 1917, and the first tracks could be laid in March 1918. The route reached Snowflake on September 6, 1918 and McNary on April 5, 1919. The final completion took place on July 1, 1920. The Apache Railway was classified as a Class II railway. From the railroad track, the forest railroad tracks of Southwest Forest Industries led into the woods. The company also built a paper mill at Snowflake. The transport links to this factory are largely provided by the Apache Railway.

From 1931 to 1936 the company was under bankruptcy administration. Passenger traffic ceased in the late 1950s. Under the name "White Mountain Scenic Railroad" between 1964 and 1976 a tourist railway with steam locomotives was operated on the route between Holbrook and Maverick . In 1984 the line between Snowflake and McNary was closed.

In 1987 the SWFI was acquired by the Stone Container Corporation . In 1999 the Canadian company Abitibi Consolidated acquired the paper mill and the Apache Railway, and in 2008 they sold both to the Catalyst Paper group .
