Apage v. Alt GR. άπαγε ( Imp. from απ-άγειν , "lead away")

  • in ancient Greek an angry exclamation: “Pack yourself!”, “Away with you!”; or as the phrase Aπαγε ὲς μακαρίαν ὲκποδὼν ( apage es makarian ekpodon ) "Shear yourself to the devil!", in the Middle Ages as Apage Satanas (cf. Mt 4,10  EU ) a fixed formula for banishing a devilish phenomenon, in the Catholic expulsion of the devil even today occurring;
