Apicius (2nd century)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Apicius was a Roman foodie. He is only mentioned in the Deipnosophistai of Athenaios . There it is reported that Apicius developed a process with which oysters could be preserved, so that Emperor Trajan did not have to do without oysters on his campaign in Mesopotamia (around 115).

In the ancient Roman cookbook De re coquinaria , written according to tradition by a Caelius (Coelius) Apicius, a method for preserving oysters is given.
