Apophatic

Apophatic (from ancient Greek. Αποφατικός apophatikos ) is a term borrowed from ancient Greek that is used in both philosophy and theology. It is an adjective that cannot be increased and is the opposite of cataphatic .

origin

Apophatic is composed of the Greek prefix apo- , which can mean “from… her”, “since”, “away” or “ent-”, and the part of the word phatic , which is derived from ancient Greek phatos - “said”. Thus, apophatic can be expressed as “rejecting” or “negating”.

Use in theology

In theology the word denotes negative statements about God, whose being goes beyond all concepts . Apophatic theology stands for negative theology .
