Appenzell goat
The Appenzell goat is a domestic goat from eastern Switzerland . The Appenzell goat comes from the Swiss Appenzellerland . It looks similar to the Saanen goat , but is significantly smaller.
Breeding began in Innerrhoden in 1902 and in Ausserrhoden around 1914. The height at the withers is 70 to 85 centimeters in males and 70 to 80 centimeters in females. The minimum weight is 65 kilograms for males and 45 kilograms for females. The fur is pure white and of medium length. Most of the animals are polled. The milk yield is good and constant. Most of the milk is processed into cheese . The Appenzell goat has remarkably broad, well-attached udders.
In the Appenzellerland, the traditional alpine lift is always accompanied by Appenzell goats . A boy in herding costume leads a herd of about twelve animals.
The breed is considered endangered.
