The Aptera 2 Series or Aptera was the prototype of a three-wheeled, two-seater electric car and low-energy vehicle from the US company Aptera Motors.

The company went bankrupt at the end of 2011. As part of this, the Chinese group of companies Zhejiang Jonway Group joined the company in April 2012. Aptera Motors has undergone a start-up as ApteraUSA .

The unusual design of the vehicle was designed by Steve Fambro in a garage in Carlsbad, California . The consumption of the hybrid version was around 0.78 liters of petrol per 100 kilometers, with a range of 190 kilometers.

The name was derived from the Greek Aptera for "wingless" to refer to the lightweight construction and design, which draws its inspiration from the construction techniques of aircraft construction.

technology

The vehicle is optimized for low air resistance, the c w value is 0.15.

It also weighs only 771 kilograms, but has an unusually wide track of 2.24 meters for a two-seater. It is 4.39 meters long and only 1.32 meters high. Because the double doors that still open at the top, it is also possible to get out when the vehicle is standing directly next to another.

The Aptera 2e is a lightweight electric vehicle . In contrast to the rear-wheel-driven first prototypes of the three-wheeled Aptera, it is driven by the two front wheels.

The engine delivers a torque of 149 Nm. The energy comes from lithium-ion batteries that work with a voltage of 360 volts. The manufacturer specifies the capacity of the batteries as 17–22 kWh, depending on the model. This enables ranges of around 160 kilometers with one charge.

According to the factory, the Aptera 2e accelerates from zero to 96 km / h (60 mph) in less than 10.0 seconds, and the top speed is stated as 145 km / h. It takes eight hours to charge the batteries with a 110-volt connection and four hours with a 220-volt connection.

The Aptera 2h model has a serial hybrid drive .

Production plan

The goal was to develop a vehicle with a range of 330 miles per US gallon at a price of less than 20,000  US dollars . It was planned that the vehicle would be available in both a fully electric version (Aptera 2e) and a hybrid version (Aptera 2h) in a price range between $ 25,000 and $ 45,000.

Aptera was taking pre-orders for California prior to production. According to the company, 4,000 customers had paid a deposit of $ 500. The car was initially only to be sold in California, and then in the entire USA from the end of 2010.

In the course of the bankruptcy of Aptera Motors (in December 2011), the Zhejiang Jonway Group bought parts of the intellectual property of the Aptera 2 series in April 2012.

Zaptera , which has been operating independently since June 2013, is to build the electric version Aptera 2e in larger series production in China as soon as the market allows.

Aptera Motors has undergone a start-up as ApteraUSA . The company plans to produce the gasoline version Aptera 2g and the electric version 2e in largely hand-made small series in the USA. According to its CEO Richard Deringer, ApteraUSA should focus on production in Detroit and Santa Rosa, and he doesn't want to wait for developments in China. A significant price increase was expected due to the production in the USA. While the originally planned Chinese-American manufacturing variant of the Aptera 2e was estimated at around 30,000 dollars per vehicle, prices between 80,000 and 100,000 dollars were now expected.

According to previous plans, one or more models should hit the market in the first quarter of 2013. This plan was dropped due to the influence of the Zhejiang Jonway Group .
