Typical arachnoid cyst in the left central fossa (right in the picture) on computed tomography

Arachnoid cysts are benign , cystic (fluid-filled), mostly congenital extensions of the spider tissue (" arachnoid ", the middle meninges ). They are often an incidental finding during computed or magnetic resonance imaging of the head . At least one arachnoid cyst was diagnosed in 1.7% of 2536 healthy male candidates for the German Air Force . Treatment of arachnoid cysts should only be considered if they cause symptoms, for example when adjacent parts of the brain or spinal cord are compressed. Arachnoid cysts are classified according to the Galassi classification, in which arachnoid cysts are divided into three different grades depending on their size, location and shape.
