The Aragoke (Aragoke = Javanese word for dragon scales) is a cultivated form of Nishikigoi (brocade carp or Koi ).

With regard to the scaling, there are 4 different crossings in Nishikigoi :

  • the common carp (wagoi)
  • the mirror carp (a scaly koi, but with a few large scales, called Doitsu Goi in Japan; example Shusui)
  • the zeilkarpfen (an unscaled koi, but with one or more rows of oversized scales, also called Doitsu Goi)
  • the leather carp (a completely scaly carp, also a Doitsu Goi)

features

The special thing about an Aragoke is that although it is also a Doitsu Goi (from Japanese, i.e. an unscaled Koi ), it has extremely large scales arranged in various formations, i.e. not wildly scattered like those of our native mirror carp .

The classic Aragoke is optically characterized by its oversized scales distributed over the whole body, which appear to be ordered in a certain way.

As a small Koi it can look like a Wagoi, but as you get older and larger you can tell that it is a Doitsu with enormous scales.

A special form of the Aragoke is a kind of zeilkarpfen , which in the best case only has the large scale line on its back.

Aragoke is available with a ginrin scaling and a non-ginrin scaling.

Aragoke are mostly monochrome Koi (an exception can be e.g. an Aragoke Ochiba Shigure / Ochiba Shigure is a cross between a monochrome gray Soragoi and a brown Chagoi, which creates a 2-colored Koi), but they appear in a wide variety of colors . This is related to the origin of the bloodline in which various different kawarimono (in Indonesia these are semi-metallic monochrome koi such as Soragoi, Chagoi and Midorigoi) were crossed. From this origin of the Indonesian kawarimono, the Aragoke also inherited their semi-metallic sheen. This is the main differentiator to the Japanese Doitsu Kawarimono variants such as Doitsu Chagoi, Soragoi or Midorigoi. Aragoke is available in all single-color shades of the Kawarimono.

origin

The origin of the Aragoke breed lies in the Samudra Koi farm in Jawa Timur (East Java) in Blitar. The breeder of this koi farm (Yusuf Hermansyah) developed the bloodline for this special variety by chance when mating normally scaled Kawarimono (here it was a Ginrin Midorigoi and a Tembaga Chagoi; Indonesian Tembaga = copper) around 2007.

The breeder Yusuf Hermansyah gave this variety the name "Aragoke" after the bloodline was stable for different colors and scales. This is a mythological name from Javanese and has the approximate meaning of "dragon-scaly".
