Work and structure

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Work and Structure is an autobiographical book by Wolfgang Herrndorf that was published in 2013 by Rowohlt Verlag . It documents the last three and a half years of his life, from the diagnosis of his brain tumor to his suicide .

Emergence

Herrndorf was diagnosed with glioblastoma in February 2010 . He then started a digital diary to keep his friends informed about his health. He later decided to make the diary public as a blog and thus reached more and more readers. As a result, the blog changed from a pure information medium to a literary text. In the end, he could only continue working on it with great effort and the help of his friends.

Herrndorf wanted his blog to be “critically reviewed and proofread” published as a book after his death. Kathrin Passig and Marcus Gärtner took on this task , who also wrote a short epilogue for it and replaced the links in the blog with a section of notes in the book.

Herrndorf dedicated the book to his 22 doctors, who are listed in chronological order at the end of the volume.

title

The title Work and Structure illustrates Herrndorf's plan for the rest of his life: he maintained a structured daily routine in order to be able to work as much as possible on his as yet unfinished texts. At the time of diagnosis, he had started two novels. Since he was now working faster, at times almost manic, the novel Tschick was published at the end of 2010, followed by the novel Sand the following year . He started another novel, Pictures of Your Great Love , which he could no longer finish and which was published as a fragment after his death.
