Archiphylax
The Archiphylax ( ancient Greek άρχιφύλαξ ) was an official in the Lycian League who had the task of collecting the taxes that Lycia had to pay to Rome .
The Lycian League had wrested a concession from Rome that was of great political importance: Lycia levied taxes that were to be paid to the Roman Fiscus on its own. In return, the Lycian government guaranteed to deliver the taxes due in full and on time. This probably already happened during the negotiations that led to the establishment of the Lycia Province .
The requirements for the archiphylax were: He should guarantee the Roman Fiscus in the name of the Lycian League for the taxes, pay the tax in full and on the due date to the Roman Fiscus, not collect taxes with hardship, advance his own money if the Tax collection did not yield the required amount and take care of the social peace and welfare of the province.
