Ardgowan House

Ardgowan House is a mansion near the Scottish town of Inverkip in Inverclyde . In 1971 the building was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A. Ardgowan House is isolated around 500 meters north of Inverkip in the midst of extensive grounds with numerous outbuildings. It is built in the Renaissance style.

history

In 1403, the Scottish King Robert III. to his illegitimate son John Stuart the lands of Ardgowan. Since then, the property has been inherited within the family. In the late 15th century the Tower House Ardgowan Castle was reached there, which is likely to be the successor to an older fortress. Archibald Stewart, 1st Baronet founded the line of the Baronets Shaw-Stewart around 1635 . Today's Ardgowan House was built not far from Ardgowan Castle under John Shaw-Stewart, 4th Baronet . As an architect, he entrusted Hugh Cairncross with the planning in 1797 . The building was completed in 1801. It was at this time that the extensive gardens were laid out by the landscape planner John Ramsay . Michael Shaw-Stewart, 6th Baronet , had the house expanded in 1825 by William Burn . Ardgowan House was redesigned again in 1862 by Michael Robert Shaw-Stewart, 7th Baronet, and finally in 1904 by Michael Hugh Shaw-Stewart, 8th Baronet . During the Second World War , the mansion served as a hospital. Various outbuildings were also lost at this time.
