Inverkip ( Gaelic : Inbhir Chip ) is a village in the Scottish council area Inverclyde .
history
The history of Inverkip is closely linked to the Ardgowan lands which the Scottish King Robert III. awarded to his illegitimate son, John Stuart, in 1403. Tower House Ardgowan Castle was built there in the 15th century . In 1801 the mansion was Ardgowan House of Shaw-Stuart - baronet completed. This is now listed as a monument in the highest monument category A.
In 1861 Inverkip had 449 inhabitants. After the population rose to 504 in the following hundred years, Inverkip recorded a stronger population increase in the second half of the 20th century. The population grew over 905 in 1981 and 1598 in 2001. As part of the 2011 census, a population of 3058 was determined.
geography
The village is located in the west of Inverclyde on the south bank of the Firth of Clyde opposite the Cowal Peninsula and is the main town of the parish of the same name . It is located about seven kilometers southwest of Greenock and 36 kilometers west of Glasgow . In Inverkip the brook Kip flows into the Firth of Clyde, from which the name Inverkips (Inbhir Chip means "mouth of the Kip") is derived. The closest localities are Wemyss Bay in the south and Greenock in the northeast.

Inverkip is on the A78 which runs from the A8 at Greenock along the coast to Prestwick in the south. In the 1860s the village was connected to the railway network with its own train station. This was initially served by the Greenock and Wemyss Bay Railway of the Caledonian Railway . Today trains on the Inverclyde Line stop in Inverkip. With the Glasgow Airport is an international airport is 30 kilometers away.
