Ars magna

Ars magna (great art) can mean:

  • The great art, taught by Ramon Llull and explained in detail in the work Ars generalis ultima around 1305, of arriving at knowledge by mechanically combining terms using a "logical machine". The ars magna is a special art for finding true statements. An answer is to be given to every question of faith through combinatorial connections of concepts.
  • Ars magna de Regulis Algebraicis (1545), a mathematical work by Gerolamo Cardano about solving equations of the third and fourth degree.
  • Ars magna sciendi, sive combinatoria in XII libros digesta (1669) by Athanasius Kircher , who also published Ars magna lucis et umbrae in 1671 .
