Arsacius of Tarsus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Arsacius of Tarsus was from 404 to 405 as Archbishop of Constantinople, the successor to John I Chrysostomos (398-404), who had been exiled because of his famous, practice-oriented sermons that did not shy away from denouncing grievances. Arsacius was the brother of Nectarius , who was the predecessor of John Chrysostom's Archbishop of Constantinople from 381 to 397.

He came from Tarsus in Cilicia . Immediately after John Chrysostom's second banishment, Arsacius was elected archbishop. However, he was not accepted as a legitimate bishop by the faithful partisans of his predecessor .
