The Art McNally Award has been presented annually since 2002 and was proclaimed by the former Commissioner of the National Football League (NFL), Paul Tagliabue . It is awarded to NFL referees who have demonstrated exemplary professionalism, commitment, athleticism and willingness to lead on and off the field.

The award is named after Art McNally , who was a referee in the NFL from 1959 to 1967 and the supervisor of the NFL referees from 1968 to 1990. Since 1996 he has been the assistant to the referee supervisor. Tagliabue said of McNally:

“Art McNally truly represented the qualities that are inscribed on the award. His dedication to the game and his professionalism and class on and off the field set the standard. "
