Artavasdes I (Armenia)

Artavasdes I was king of Armenia from about 159 BC. BC to 115 BC BC and came from the Artaxid dynasty . He succeeded his father Artaxias I. by.

Artavasde's name is the Latin translation of an old Iranian name Ṛtavazdā, which is identical to the Avestic Ašavazdah and probably means "powerful / persevering through the truth". Around 120 BC The Parthian king Mithridates II defeated Artavasdes I and forced him to recognize Parthian suzerainty. Artavasdes was forced to give Tigranes , who was either his son or nephew, as a hostage to the Parthians .
