Artaxias I.
Artaxias I (also Artaxes or Artashes , Armenian Արտաշես Առաջին ; Artašēs ) was the founder of the ruling dynasty of the Artaxids in Armenia . He ruled from about 190-160 BC. He was married to Satenik, a daughter of the King of the Alans .
Originally Artaxias was governor (Stratēgos) of the Seleucid king Antiochus III together with Zariadris . After his defeat in the Battle of Magnesia in 190/189 BC. He became king of Armenia, Zariadres king of Sophene . Artaxias gave up the previous capital Jerwandaschat on the Aras and founded a new metropolis further downstream, which he called Artaxata . After Strabo and Plutarch he was advised and supported by Hannibal . Artaxias I had many steles set up as border markings in his empire. These were described in Aramaic , the state language of the Persian Empire. On these steles he calls himself mlk rwndkn , Orontid King. Thus he legitimized his rule via a connection to the old royal house of Armenia, the Orontids .
Antiochus IV took Artaxias in 164 or 165 BC. Caught in BC. He only released him after he had recognized the supremacy of the Seleucid Empire over Armenia. His successor was around 160 BC. Chr., His son Artavasdes I .
