The inferior mesenteric artery and its branches.

The arteria colica sinistra ("left colon artery ") is a branch of the lower intestinal artery ( arteria mesenterica inferior or caudalis). Shortly after the origin it divides into an ascending branch ( ascending ramus ) and a descending branch ( descending ramus ). The ascending branch anastomoses with the arteria colica media , this connection is called Arcus Riolani , the descending branch with the arteria sigmoidea . The nodes lymphoidei colici sinistri lie along the arteria colica left .

The left colic artery supplies the descending colon and the distal third of the transverse colon.
