Arthur Engel

Arthur Engel (* 1928 ) is a German math teacher.

Engel studied at the University of Stuttgart with a doctorate in 1952 and was then a high school teacher. From 1970 he taught at the Ludwigsburg University of Education and in 1972 he became a professor at the University of Frankfurt, which he remained until 1993.

Since 1965 he has been introducing a federal mathematics competition , which first took place in 1970. In 1977 he led the first West German team at an International Mathematical Olympiad (Belgrade 1977). In 1989 he was the jury chairman of the International Mathematical Olympiad in Braunschweig. As a mathematics teacher, he was particularly concerned with stochastics and computers and algorithms in the classroom.

In 1990 he received the Federal Cross of Merit. In 1991 he received the David Hilbert Award from the World Federation of National Mathematics Competitions (WFNMC).
