In December 2000, Vanetsyan began his service as an investigator in the National Security Authorities of Armenia. In 2002 he attended advanced training courses at the Academy of the Russian Domestic Intelligence Service FSB .

In 2015 Wanezjan was awarded the medal “For Service in Combat” by decree of Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan . He also received other awards from the National Security Service and the Ministry of Interior of Armenia for his services .

After the revolution in Armenia , Vanetsyan was appointed head of the country's National Security Service by Armenian President Armen Zarkissyan in May 2018 .

On September 22, 2018, Vanetsyan was the only candidate to become president of the Armenian Football Association.

In September 2019, Wanezjan resigned from his position as head of the National Security Service. From then on, he went into the opposition due to his critical attitude towards the policies of the incumbent Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and took over the leadership of the "Hajrenik" (Heimat) party at the end of May 2020. At the opening ceremony of a new party office in the city of Gawar at the end of June 2020, Vanetsjan sharply criticized Pashinyan for establishing "dictatorial conditions" in Armenia. According to him, Pashinyan was creating autocracy, destroying the foundations of the rule of law and thus demoralizing Armenian society. The crisis management of the Pashinyan administration associated with the Covid 19 pandemic described Wanezjan as "catastrophic" and called on the Prime Minister to resign. According to a report in the newspaper Hrapark, Pashinyan has instructed the new national security chief of Armenia, Argishti Karamyan , to "neutralize" Vanetsyan, whom he sees as a threat to his politics.

Controversy

On September 11, 2018, a recording of a telephone conversation between Vanetsyan and the head of the special investigation authority of Armenia, Sasun Khachatryan, appeared on the network . In this 8-minute telephone conversation, Vanetsyan and Khachatryan discussed the arrest of the former Armenian President Robert Kocharyan and the criminal proceedings against the now deposed General Secretary of the Russian-led Organization of the Collective Security Treaty (CSTO) Yuri Khachaturov and against the former Defense Minister of Armenia Mikael Harutunyan . All three are accused of violating the constitutional order during the protests in Armenia in 2008 . During the conversation, Vanetsyan told of a judge who had already been ordered to put Kocharyan behind bars at all costs. Then they talked about Khachaturov. Vanetsyan pointed out that a possible conviction of the ex-CSTO chief would put Armenia's relations with Russia at risk. On December 5, another recording went online in which Vanetsyan was discussing the possible imprisonment of Khachaturov with Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Pashinyan warned of the negative consequences of such a move.

In an interview with the journalists, Wanezjan emphasized that he did not feel guilty about the wiretapping scandal and the content of the conversation. In the age of high technology, wiretapping of heads of state and government is common. According to him, the Armenian security organs even recorded the phone calls made by Angela Merkel and the Chinese head of state.
