The drug account NRW PLUS is a digital, patient-specific account in which cross-sectoral medication data from medical practices, hospitals and pharmacies can be compiled to improve drug therapy safety and drug supply. The patient also has direct access to his medication data via a mobile app.

With every medical prescription, every new medication dispensed in the pharmacy and every medication that the patient has added himself via his mobile app, integrated AMTS check programs check for interactions, contraindications, double prescriptions and the PRISCUS list ( Beers list ). Warnings are shown in color depending on their severity. With this, the NRW PLUS drug account aims to make a contribution to drug therapy safety (AMTS).

Goal setting

Serious adverse drug reactions (ADRs) cause around 250,000 hospital admissions in Germany every year. Incorrectly taken drugs and drug combinations claim up to 30,000 deaths every year. A major reason for this lies in the lack of knowledge of a patient's overall medication. This is where the NRW PLUS drug account comes in and can thus make an active contribution to increasing drug therapy safety. With every medical prescription, every new medication dispensed in the pharmacy and every medication that the patient has added himself via his mobile app, integrated AMTS check programs check for interactions, contraindications, double prescriptions and the PRISCUS, taking into account the data in the NRW PLUS drug account -List and give a warning if necessary.

Consortium / project participants

The drug account NRW PLUS project is funded by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia as part of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) (2014–2020).

In the drug account NRW PLUS project, a consortium made up of three players in the health sector under the leadership of CompuGroup Medical SE is responsible for the conception, implementation, operation and evaluation:

  • CompuGroup Medical Managementgesellschaft mbH, Bochum
  • RWTH Aachen University Hospital, Aachen
  • Bielefeld University, Bielefeld, Chair for "Health Economics and Health Management"

Content / technology

The drug account NRW PLUS connects the two projects FallAkte Plus and drug account NRW. The drug account NRW PLUS is part of the electronic patient file CGM LIFE and fully uses the security standards of CGM LIFE. In this way, in addition to the Federal Medication Plan, medical prescriptions, pharmacy levies and medication entries are transferred to the medication account via the drug account app.

With the existing collaboration platform FallAkte Plus of the University Clinic RTWH Aachen, which ensures secure doctor-to-doctor communication, medication data from the NRW PLUS drug account will be made available in the FallAkte in future. In addition to the overview of the previous course of treatment (findings already collected, X-rays, OP reports and doctor's letters), clinicians now also receive medication data and can add medication data themselves.

Pharmaceutical account app

For their own medication management, the participating patients are offered the Mediteo drug account app for Android and iOS. This allows patients to participate in their medication management process.
