The cable car was designed by the Portuguese engineer Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard , who was also responsible for similar projects. It went into operation on June 28, 1892. Originally it was powered by water ballast , converted to steam in 1896 and finally electrified in 1914. After an accident in 1916, operations were interrupted for nine years.

In February 2002 the Elevador was declared a Monumento Nacional .

The Elevador da Bica is a classic funicular railway with the hoisting machine at the mountain station and the stepped carriage adapted to the average gradient. Because of the route on streets the cars run on grooved rails , instead of the usual Abtschen Dodge exist above and below the turnout in mid-span Gleisverschlingungen . The pull rope runs in one channel below the road surface.
