Associação Brasileira de Normas Técnicas

The Associação Brasileira de Normas Técnicas (ABNT), German  Brazilian Association for Technical Standards , is the institution responsible for technical standardization in Brazil . The association, founded on September 28, 1940, is a private, non-profit making organization and acts in the service of the common good. It is based in Rio de Janeiro .

The ABNT is a founding member of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the Pan-American Standards Commission ( Comisión Panamericana de Normas Técnicas , COPANT ) and the Association for Standardization of Mercosur ( Asociación Mercosur de Normalización , AMN ). She is the official Brazilian representative in these three organizations and a member of the International Electrotechnical Commission .

The Brazilian Standards Institute has now published over 8,500 standards in Portuguese.
