Assol (first name)
Assol (Ассоль) is a feminine Russian given name.
Origin and meaning
The name is an artificial word from the novel Purple Sails by Alexander Grin , in which he describes the main character, a girl from the beach. As a rule, originally Russian female first names end in -а, but here femininity is expressed by the soft sign (-ь) at the end. With the appeal of соль (salt), the author apparently wanted to create a reference to the sea. Since Grin came into contact with many ports and foreign languages as a seaman, a reference to the port city of Limassol on Cyprus or the Spanish adjective azul (blue) is conceivable.
