Asthma (disambiguation)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As asthma (from Greek άσθμα , "panting") is defined as a paroxysmal, often severe shortness of breath can have various causes:

  • Bronchial asthma is a narrowing of the airways that can be triggered by external or internal stimuli in an overly sensitive bronchial system. When one speaks of "asthma", "bronchial asthma" is actually often meant.
  • Cardiac asthma is caused by increased blood congestion in the pulmonary circulation in left heart failure. The seizures usually occur at night while lying down, i.e. when the venous return or the central blood volume increases.
  • Nasal asthma is caused by diseases of the nasal cavity and can lead to bronchial asthma. One rarely speaks of this form.
  • Asthma spasticum or asthma spasmodicum, predominantly spasmodic, mostly psychogenic bronchial asthma
  • Uraemic asthma is caused by uremia as a result of serious impregnation of the lungs (increased permeability of the alveolar and capillary walls; possibly with cardiac components).
