Astovidatu ( Western : dissolver of the body ) also Asto Vidatu or Astovidet is a demon from ancient Iranian mythology : He is the demon of death and as a Daeva is directly subordinate to Ahriman . Every time the soul guides Sraosha and Bahram (old Persian Verethragna ) lead the souls of the deceased into the air, Astovidatu and Aeshma try to capture these souls with a magical noose.

Asto Vidatu is known as the pursuer of the dead or the god of shadows. He is one of the Daevas (god-like beings) and tried to capture the recently deceased, who had been judged by Nergal and Ereškigal , in order to eat them before they Irkallacould leave and reach the immortals. He tied the souls of the eaten in a knife. Asto Vidatu collected these blades, which had names and served different purposes. It is said that he inhabits the shadows, and if a person's shadow is longer than himself, then he would watch them or walk past them. He is the master of the assassins and beings who seek the life of others, so the murderers especially revere him. He himself is a servant of Aeshma, the dark messenger, and occasionally represents him.
