Breath sign

Breath sign

The breath symbol (also comma ) is used in musical notation to identify places where the musician (most commonly a singer or the player of a wind instrument) can take a short break or breathe. The breath sign does not represent a long pause per se .

Although mainly intended for singers and players of wind instruments, the breath mark can also be found in the literature on all other instruments and is then noted when the composer only has a brief interruption in the musical flow, but no longer pause, but rather an imaginary, short " Breath "wishes. This practice also occurs in early music, such as in JS Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier .
