Athanasio Celia (also Athanasios or Athanassios Celia) is a painter , author and art expert. He is the founder of "verticalism" (in English "verticalism"), the term with which he describes the theory of his art dominated by vertical lines. The first large all-day auction of his art took place in Germany in 1995.

Athanasio Celia became internationally known in 2007 for his key role in the return of one of the most valuable ancient treasures - a golden Greek wreath (400 BC) - from the J. Paul Getty Museum to Greece . During a vernissage of his works of art in a gallery in Munich in 1992, he first came into contact with the golden wreath and the people who wanted to sell the object and gave them names of potential buyers. When he later learned that the object had been illegally excavated, he notified the German authorities and, years later, also handed over the photos given to him by the smugglers to the Greek state in order to enable the object to be returned. An award-winning documentary on the subject has been shown in several countries.

As an art expert, Athanasio Celia became known worldwide through the appraisal of Nazi-looted art . It was a notebook, which Athanasio Celia ascribed to the Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh , and an oil painting which Athanasio Celia also ascribed to Vincent van Gogh.
