history

The largest American military base outside the United States ( Kaiserslautern Military Community ) is located in and around Kaiserslautern . Approximately 50,000 US citizens live in the region, both military and civilians. To promote their exchange with Rhineland-Palatinate and to make a contribution to educational work in the field of American politics and society, the Atlantic Academy was founded in 1996. On February 22, 1996, the birthday of the first American President George Washington , it was officially opened by the then Prime Minister of Rhineland-Palatinate, Kurt Beck . With Werner Kremp as director, she initially moved into rooms in the Theodor-Zink-Museum in Steinstrasse. On October 16, 1996, the sponsoring association “Atlantic Academy Rhineland-Palatinate eV” was formed. In 2010 Wolfgang Tönnesmann became director of the Atlantic Academy, which in turn was replaced by David Sirakov in early 2015. The Atlantic Academy is partly financed through membership fees, participation fees and third-party funds, but above all through a grant from the state government.

The academy has been a recognized educational institution of the Federal Agency for Civic Education since 2014 .

program

The program can generally be divided into 3 areas: encounter, education and advice.

  • The event repertoire here includes seminars, conferences and lectures on politics and society in the USA. These events take place mainly in Rhineland-Palatinate, but also in other places in the Federal Republic of Germany and are usually aimed at anyone interested.
  • The Atlantic Academy offers schools the opportunity to request workshops for upper school classes and faculty, which take place directly in the respective schools and cover a wide range of topics, from German-American relations to American music history. In addition, the academy publishes the series “Atlantic Texts”. These books cover various cultural and political issues related to America, often oriented towards current events. So far, forty-one volumes have been published in the series (as of June 2016).
  • Last but not least, the employees of the Atlantic Academy are available as advisors on American scientific topics.
